• What information is given
• What the question is asking

If something is unclear, read again. Do not rush into calculations.

For lower primary students, circling important information helps them stay focused and avoid missing key details. Strong exam techniques start with strong reading discipline.

Step 2: Identify the Correct Math Concept

From the clues given in the question, students must determine which math concept should be applied. For example:

• Age problems: The difference between two persons’ ages does not change over time.
• Remainder concept: A common trap is confusing 2/5 of the remainder with 2/5 of the total. Students must be very clear about what the fraction is referring to.
• Equal concept: Look out for keywords such as “equal”. For instance, 25% of Jack’s money is equal to 40% of Mary’s money. This signals that two quantities can be equated.
• Ratio: Carefully identify which ratio part belongs to which person or item before forming equations.
• Percentage: Always determine the base value. Percentage is meaningless unless students know what the whole represents.
