Working Backwards Made Simple: The Powerful Heuristics Trick to Solve This Challenging Primary 5 Math Fractions Word Problem

Many students fear complicated Primary Math word problems because the information feels confusing at first glance. Questions involving fractions, sharing and multiple groups often overwhelm students before they even start solving. However, students who learn heuristics such as working backwards usually solve these questions much more confidently.

Take a look at this challenging Primary Math fractions question:

An equal number of pencils were distributed to 8 students and 10 teachers. Each student then gave 1/4 of their share of pencils to the teachers. As a result, each teacher received 44 more pencils. How many pencils did each student have left?

Struggling with working backwards in Primary Math? Learn how heuristics and step-by-step thinking help students solve this tricky fractions word problem confidently. Discover how Superstar Teacher supports self motivated learners with instant homework help and on-demand homework help.

This word problem confuses many students because several actions happen at once. Students need to track the fractions carefully while understanding how the pencils moved between the students and teachers. Instead of rushing into calculations, confident learners break the problem into smaller steps.

The key heuristic here is working backwards.

One should first focus on the teachers. Since each teacher received 44 more pencils, you can find the total additional pencils received by all 10 teachers. Next, you should recognise that these extra pencils came entirely from the 8 students. Once this relationship becomes clear, the remaining steps become much easier.

Working backwards helps self motivated learners stay organised and avoid careless mistakes in complicated fractions questions. More importantly, this heuristic teaches students how to think logically and approach unfamiliar questions with confidence.

At Superstar Teacher, students receive instant homework help and on-demand homework help from mentors who guide them through difficult Primary Math heuristics step by step. The goal is not just to find the answer, but to help every student become a more confident and independent learner.

  • so the method that they gave me in the green box isn’t really clear for me… i can’t rlly understand it
  • especially the second step
  • can work backwards for this question.
since 10 teachers received 44 more pencils each, means in total, there's 44*10=440 pencils that the 8 students gave to the 10 teachers.
that means each student gave 440/8=55
since each student gave ¼ of their pencils away, that means ¼u -> 55
which can be thought of as 1u -> 55
and they each would be left with 1-¼=¾ which is 3u
    so 3u -> 55*3 = 165
  • ohhhhh
  • so 440 is the collective extra amount that the students gave the teachers
  • yup!
  • and to divide 440 means since there’s 8 students we r finding 1?
  • yess
  • omg thanks so much ??
  • np!!
  • bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • byee have a good public holiday!
  • you too! have a good weekend
